Pools come in a variety of shapes and sizes; however, the best thing about every pool is that they operate the same way. No matter the shape, size, or added features, every pool utilizes a combination of filtration and chemical treatment to consistently maintain clean and safe water. New pool owners, and even those who have had a pool for a while, don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of how their pool works.
The Basics
A pool includes four main tools:
- A pump
- A filter
- A pool heater
- A chlorinator
Your pool utilizes all four of these components to keep the pool water safe and clean. It works similarly to the circulatory system in the human body. The pool’s pump suctions water down through skimmers and drains. Along the way, it removes large debris. Smaller debris is then filtered out by skimmer baskets and then through the filter. Lastly, the water is treated and heated before returning to the pool.
How Pool Pumps Work
The pump is the heart of a pool system. It creates the flow of water that allows chemicals to circulate evenly throughout the pool, sanitizes the pool, and moves debris through the system and out of the pool. There are three types of pumps your pool can use, which are: variable, single-speed, and dual-speed pumps. The key differences between these three types of pumps are speed, energy saving, and automation. Talk to a pool professional about which one you think is the best for your pool
How Pool Filters Work
A pool filter is responsible for filtering out debris from the pool. It’s the reason your pool remains clean. There are three main filter types:
- Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filters
- Sand Filters
- Cartridge Filters
The difference between these filters is how much debris is removed. D.E. filters can capture particles down to 3-5 microns, sand filters can capture down to 20-50 microns, and cartridge flyers can capture particles down to 10-20 microns.
How Pool Heaters Work
Next, the pool heater will warm your pool water up to a pre-set temperature. This allows pool owners to enjoy their pool even if the weather is cool or they have a shady backyard. You can choose to heat your pool via propane, natural gas, or electric.
