Maintaining Your Pool Over the Winter

Not being able to use your pool during the winter can stink, but if you don’t properly maintain your pool, you won’t be able to swim in it when things start warming up. At Patriot Pools, we have helped many homeowners with all of their pool service needs, and we wanted to talk today about some different things you should do to help maintain your pool over the winter months of the year.

Make Sure the Pool is Clear

Before you can even close your pool up, you need to make sure any equipment or pool floats/toys are removed from the pool. Leaving these items in could cause damage to the equipment. These things should be stored somewhere where they are dry until you’re ready to use them again next season.

Cover Your Pool Up

The easiest thing you can do to maintain your pool over the winter is to use a pool cover. A cover will prevent dirt and debris from getting in, which makes the cleanup process much easier when you finally do open your pool up. You’ll need to periodically check your cover to ensure it is still set properly. If any of the weights holding it down are disturbed, the cover could fall in the pool, along with all of the debris it has caught.

Watch Out for Freezing Weather

It’s a good idea to run your pool filter throughout the winter to help keep the water clean for when you open it up. However, if you’re doing this, it is imperative that you flush out all of your equipment when freezing temperatures come about. Otherwise, the water in your filter and pump can freeze and cause some serious damage.

Balance the Water Chemistry

Even though you’re not swimming in the water, it’s still a good idea to keep on top of the chemistry in your pool. There are a number of chemicals that you need to put in your pool to keep the water clean. Doing this over the winter will help make your water much more manageable when spring comes around, and you’re ready to remove the cover and start swimming!

Clean Throughout the Winter

Even with a cover, some dirt and debris are going to get into your pool. All of this will need to be cleaned when the pool is opened. Alternatively, you could periodically clean your pool through the winter. Doing so will make cleaning much easier when it’s time to dive in!
