Shallow Water Lifeguard Training (Web-Based and Classroom Based)

The American Red Cross Shallow Water Blended Learning Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in water up to 5 feet deep and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. Students will be required to complete assignments online, prior to coming to class, therefore there will be a strict registration deadline.

  1. Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.

  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

  3. Complete a timed event within 50 seconds.

    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.

    • Submerge to a depth of 4-5 feet to retrieve a 10lb object.

    • Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water

    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Purpose: The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in water up to 5 feet deep and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This class is offered both online and with instructor-led skill sessions.

Certification Requirements:

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course

  • Must complete all online course work before the first Instructor Led class

  • Attend all class sessions

  • Successfully perform all required skills

  • Successfully complete three final skill scenarios

  • Pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.

Upon Course Completion you will receive a certification that is valid for 2 years. This certification includes Shallow Water Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED

**You will receive an email with the online session link once the class is available. **Must complete the online portion of the class prior to the first day of the course. **You Must bring your certificate of achievement with you to the first day of the course to be guaranteed a spot in the course.
